K. L. Bajoria College has been established in the memory of Late KAMAKHYALAL BAJORIA, the founder of K. L. Bajoria Charitable Trust. It is situated in an idyllic ambience in Boyce Road, Shillong. It is approachable from different directions and caters to the need of the students of Pynthorbah, Nongmynsong, Upper and Lower New Colony, Golf – Links, Polo Hills, Forest Colony, Laitumkhrah and elsewhere. The College stands next to the B. K. Bajoria Senior Secondary School, the only independent School in Meghalaya affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi.
The College is a private co-educational Institute sponsored and managed by a linguistic and religious minority non-profitable charitable Trust, registered under Indian Trust Act.
It provides admission to all sections of students, irrespective of caste, creed religion and sex. The Institution seeks to give quality education to all, especially to the tribal students of the North East of India. As such, it is a veritable example of National Integration, where students of different languages, castes, creed and religion are treated equally and intermingle with a spirit of tolerance and friendship.
The College was formally inaugurated by His Excellency, The than Governor of Meghalaya – Shri. M. M. Jacob, on the 10th of July 2004. The College is under Section 2 (f) of the U.G.C. Act 1956- which means that it is a Self financing, privately managed institution, which gets no fund or grants either from the UGC or the Government. After receiving the first Affiliation from North Eastern Hil University in June 2004, the College has been subsequently given Affiliation for both pass and honours till date . The College is now well prepared for the Semester System introduced by North Eastern Hill University.
The College has its own land and building. The ambience is calm and quiet and is perfectly suitable as an abode of learning. The College has internet facilities for the students as well as the teachers. The students have separate common rooms and toilet for boys and girls. The Common rooms are well equipped with recreation items, such as table Tennis, Carrom boards and other indoor games etc. Teachers have an airy and spacious common room with lockers of their own. They have their separate toilet. The College has a spacious and beautiful Auditorium and an indoor stadium of its own. The college undergoes constant beautification and renovation. It also has two canteens run by Nescafe and a private enterprise , which supply wholesome and clean food to the teachers and students of the College.
The teachers are sincere and dedicated and well-qualified. All of them possess UGC norms and some are NET qualified while others are trying for it . They attend Faculty development programmes, refresher courses, workshops and seminars whenever they get a chance to do so. The college takes special care to send them to these. They are also given EPF and ESI benefits.
The number of classrooms is sufficient. They are spacious, airy and well-lighted. The Library has more than 3000 books plus reference books and is managed by a qualified Librarian. It has enough seating space for students and teachers. Teachers are encouraged to buy books on their subjects for the Library. The College tries to procure books from different sources and has held book exhibitions in the premise which helped to increase the number of books in our Library and also encouraged students to buy books. The College Library also has e – book facility and teachers and students can access a large number of e- books and journals.
An inspection team of the Examination Department of NEHU came to inspect the college on the 10th of September 2004 and subsequently approved the creation of an Examination Centre in the College. The College has now become a centre for Evaluation of NEHU Under Graduate Examinations . The results of the college have been consistently very good as we try to give quality education to our students.
The college hosted a National Seminar in association with the Indian Council of Small Scale Industries sponsored by the Planning Commission, Government of India, on the 30th of June 2007. The Chief Guest was the Governor of the time, His Excellency, Shri. B. L. Joshi. The Guest of Honour was the Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prof. P. Tandon. Among the eminent speakers were – Dr. S. K. Mishra, Department of Economics NEHU, Prof. N. Srivastava, Dean of Economics and Inf. Sciences NEHU etc.
Various orientation programmes are organized in the college to give proper guidance and counseling to the students regarding their studies and career. A Symposium was organized by the College on the Folklore and Poetry of North East India, in association with Sahitya Akademi. The Chief Guest was the Vice – chancellor of NEHU Prof. P. Tandon. Among the eminent paper readers were Dr. T. Ao, Dean of Humanities NEHU, Dr. K. C. Baral, Director EFLU, Dr. E. Syiem, head of Department English NEHU and many others.
The College holds Inter- College Debate Competition every year which is a grand success and is very popular among the students. Fashion shows , Exhibitions etc . are held in which students have always excelled. The College has regular activities like Freshers’ Welcome, Teachers’ Day, College Week, Farewell Socials, etc. The students have also taken part in Social Welfare activities in association with Bethany Society.
The College regularly holds Debate Competitions, Singing Competitions, Fashion Shows, etc. Students have taken part in Inter College activities and excelled in them. Teachers are sent regularly to workshops and Seminars as a part of in-service training.
The College has taken the initiative to start Vocational Courses in Conversational English, Fashion Design and Interior Design with IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training (IIVET). This is the only, new private college which has taken the initiative to do so.Lately it has ventured on its own and the departments are doing very well under the guidance of excellent teachers . The College has recently been associated with NSS and Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) and has actively taken part in all the programmes such as National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, International Youth Day, World AIDS Day, Street Plays, etc. The students have also taken part in arranging programmes connected with Disaster Management. Some of our students have made us proud by achieving National and International recognition. They have participated in Meghalaya’s Youth Icon Competition, Poetry writing competition organised by North Eastern Service of All India Radio, Rovers Scout International Competition etc and have won accolades.
The College has its own website – www.klbajoriacollege.org, which was launched on 18th June 2011.
The College has its own anthem and it has also released the six issues of The College Magazine – ‘ Efflorescence’.
Although academic excellence is the priority of the Institution, stress is given to inculcate a sense of discipline and a spirit of honesty and sincerity, which will give self confidence to the students and stand them in good stead later in life and will also make them proud of their Alma Mater.
